BEND, Ore. — A Bend woman was injured Saturday night after a man accidentally fired a handgun through the floor of a home, striking her in the room below, according to Bend Police.
Officers responded at approximately 8:08 p.m. Aug. 22 to a report of a gunshot wound in the 63000 block of Layton Avenue.
Police said 53-year-old Bend resident Brandon Paul Ferris was in an upstairs bedroom showing a 9mm handgun to a visitor when he mistakenly loaded a live round instead of a training cartridge.
When Ferris fired the handgun, the bullet traveled through the floor and struck a 24-year-old woman who was sitting in the room below. The woman was struck in the arm and abdomen.
Officers provided aid at the scene before the woman was transported to St. Charles Bend with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Ferris was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Deschutes County Jail on suspicion of third-degree assault and fourth-degree assault.
Bend Police reminded firearm owners to practice safe handling and secure their weapons properly.
Police advised gun owners to always keep firearms pointed in a safe direction, keep their fingers off the trigger unless prepared to fire, and never assume a firearm is unloaded. Officers also emphasized that firearms should be checked to ensure they are unloaded whenever they are picked up or handled.
