Motorcyclist Killed in Head-On Crash on Highway 30 Near Astoria
CLATSOP COUNTY, Ore. — A Portland motorcyclist was killed Saturday evening after crossing into oncoming traffic and colliding head-on with a van on Highway 30 near Astoria, according to the Oregon State Police.
The crash occurred at approximately 8:59 p.m. on August 1 near milepost 90, close to Timmerman Road.
A preliminary investigation found that Samuel Stephen Clutter, 55, of Portland, was riding a black Triumph Daytona motorcycle eastbound on Highway 30 when he attempted to pass another vehicle in a designated no-passing zone. While making the maneuver, the motorcycle crossed into the westbound lane and struck a yellow Ford Transit van head-on.
Clutter was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Ford Transit, Matthew James Weatherman, 42, of Warrenton, suffered minor injuries in the collision.
Highway 30 was impacted for approximately five hours while investigators processed the scene and crews cleared the roadway.
The Oregon State Police were assisted by the Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office, Knappa Fire District, Medix Ambulance Service, the Clatsop County Medical Examiner’s Office, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
The crash remains under investigation.
