YAMHILL COUNTY, Ore. — A 19-year-old Salem man was killed and his passenger seriously injured Saturday afternoon in a head-on collision with a commercial truck on Highway 18 near Newberg, according to the Oregon State Police.
The crash occurred at approximately 2:06 p.m. on July 11 near milepost 58.
A preliminary investigation found that a silver Honda Civic, driven by Jayce Alan Hall, 19, of Salem, was traveling westbound on Highway 18 when the vehicle failed to negotiate a curve. The Honda crossed into the eastbound lane and collided head-on with a white International commercial motor vehicle.
Hall was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Honda’s passenger, Isaiah Jacob Aas, 18, of Salem, sustained serious injuries and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
The driver of the commercial truck, Robert Emmanuel Hunter, 43, of Portland, was not injured. State police said Hunter remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.
The crash closed or significantly impacted Highway 18 for approximately five hours while emergency crews investigated and cleared the scene.
Oregon State Police were assisted by the Newberg-Dundee Police Department, the Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office, the Newberg Fire Department, Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
