UMATILLA COUNTY, Ore. — A single-vehicle rollover crash on Interstate 82 early Sunday morning claimed the life of a Washington man and left three others injured, according to the Oregon State Police.
Troopers responded to the crash at approximately 12:01 a.m. on July 5 near milepost 2 on westbound Interstate 82, just outside Umatilla.
The preliminary investigation found that a black Dodge Ram, driven by Adrian Lopez Clara, 28, of Kennewick, Washington, was traveling westbound when it failed to maintain its lane, left the roadway, and rolled multiple times.
A passenger in the vehicle, Martin Romulo Diaz, 42, of Kennewick, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver, Adrian Lopez Clara, suffered serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. Two additional passengers were also injured in the crash. Juan Lopez Nazairo, 48, of Kennewick, sustained serious injuries, while Jesus Lopez Clara, 21, of Kennewick, was transported to a hospital with minor injuries.
The crash closed or impacted the highway for approximately six hours while investigators processed the scene and crews cleared the wreckage.
Investigators believe excessive speed and driver impairment were contributing factors in the crash.
The Oregon State Police were assisted at the scene by the Umatilla Police Department, the Washington State Patrol, and the Oregon Department of Transportation. The crash remains under investigation.
