Happy Valley, OR – Following President Trump’s announcement that he will not sign the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, Congresswoman Janelle Bynum released a profanity-laced statement:
“This is some bullsh*t – and exactly why the American people believe that the system is broken,” said Rep. Bynum.
Congresswoman Bynum serves on the House Committee on Financial Services, which shepherded the bill through the US House of Representatives. The bill, which includes policy proposals that President Trump supported in his 2026 State of the Union speech, notably focuses on single-family homes while excluding apartments and multi-family housing. Institutional investment in housing is immensely unpopular, and one of the most notorious housing investment firms is BlackRock Capital. Bond Real Estate of Indiana notes the following about BlackRock’s portfolio:
Rather than buying individual homes, BlackRock mainly invests in commercial real estate and real estate-backed assets. This includes apartment complexes and multifamily buildings, office buildings, industrial and warehouse properties, data centers, retail spaces, and real estate investment trusts, also known as REITs.
In September 2025, BlackRock Capital’s corporate PAC, BlackRock Funds Services Group LLC Political Action Committee, donated $5,000 to Congresswoman Bynum’s campaign, as reported to the Federal Elections Commission:
Just three months later, the House Committee on Financial Services voted in favor of the bill, which was ultimately passed by a bipartisan vote of the House. Congresswoman Bynum remarked on the bill’s passage on her congressional website at the time:
“Housing has been a day-one priority for me,” said Rep. Bynum. “I’m proud that this bill to build more housing and lower costs is one step closer to becoming law. I’ll partner with anyone to get it done for Oregon’s Fifth, and I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to deliver results for our small businesses.”
Congresswoman Janelle Bynum did not respond to a request for comment.
