KLAMATH COUNTY, Ore. — A 67-year-old Klamath Falls man was killed Monday night after being struck by a commercial truck while attempting to retrieve his dog from Highway 97 near Chemult, according to the Oregon State Police.
The fatal crash occurred at approximately 10:07 p.m. on June 22 near milepost 200 in Klamath County.
Preliminary findings indicate that a white Freightliner commercial motor vehicle was traveling southbound on Highway 97 when it struck pedestrian Scott Henry Beggio, 67, of Klamath Falls, who was standing in the southbound travel lane. Investigators believe Beggio had entered the roadway in an effort to catch his dog after it ran onto the highway.
Beggio was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Freightliner was driven by Larry Dotson, 44, of Vicksburg, Mississippi. Authorities reported that Dotson was not injured in the collision.
Highway 97 was affected for approximately five hours as investigators examined the scene and crews worked to clear the roadway.
The Oregon State Police were assisted by the Klamath County Sheriff’s Office, Chemult Rural Fire Protection District, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
The crash remains under investigation.
