PORTLAND, Ore. — Located just minutes from downtown Portland along the Willamette River, Oaks Park is marking its 121st anniversary with a community Birthday Bash that blends nostalgia, local flavor, and discounted thrills.
First opening its gates on May 30, 1905, the historic amusement park has spent more than a century welcoming generations of visitors. This year’s celebration will feature beer and spirits tastings, cake and balloons, and the unveiling of a redesigned version of the park’s “Wrath of Willamette Willy” game, created by local artist Mike Bennett. Attendees will also be able to play the newly reimagined attraction free of charge during the event.
In honor of its founding year, Oaks Park is offering a limited number of Unlimited Ride Wristbands for $19.05, available online while supplies last. Park officials say the discounted passes are expected to sell quickly.
“Oaks Park has been a part of the Portland community for 121 years,” said Emily MacKay, Marketing and Events Director for the park. “Some families have had multiple generations that have enjoyed Oaks Park over the years, and we’re proud to be a big part of their families’ tradition.”
Established originally to boost ridership on the region’s early interurban streetcar system, Oaks Park quickly became a popular destination featuring attractions such as exotic animals, nightly fireworks, bathhouse facilities, and early electric lighting—an innovation that once drew large crowds.
Today, the nonprofit amusement park remains one of the oldest continuously operating parks in the United States. Since 1985, it has been operated by the Oaks Park Association after the Bollinger family donated the property, with a mission to preserve the historic site and provide affordable family entertainment.
Modern-day visitors now experience a mix of classic and contemporary attractions, including a historic carousel, picnic grounds, carnival games, a miniature golf course overlooking the Willamette River, the Oaks Park train, and the oldest continuously operating roller rink in the United States.
Park officials note that media interviews are available via Zoom or on-site, along with b-roll footage and images for coverage.
