LANE COUNTY, Ore. — On May 13 at approximately 4 p.m., deputies with the Lane County Sheriff’s Office responded in emergency mode after receiving reports of a juvenile in crisis on top of a building at Lane Community College.
Upon arrival, deputies established contact with the juvenile, who was reported to be distraught and positioned near the edge of the roof. Additional deputies responded to the scene and worked with the juvenile’s family to gather background information and better understand potential triggers related to the incident.
Two responding deputies who are members of the Lane County Sheriff’s Crisis Negotiation Team engaged the juvenile and began de-escalation efforts, working to build rapport and encourage a safe resolution. Emergency personnel, including fire and EMS crews, also responded to the scene with specialized equipment, including a ladder truck.
After more than 20 minutes of negotiation, at approximately 5 p.m., the juvenile safely came down from the roof without injury. The individual was then transported to a local hospital for further evaluation and care.
The Lane County Sheriff’s Office expressed appreciation for the coordinated response, thanking Lane Community College Public Safety as well as fire and EMS personnel for their assistance in bringing the situation to a safe conclusion.
