GOVERNMENT CAMP, Ore. — Emergency crews responded Thursday morning to a fatal incident involving a chairlift maintenance basket at Mt. Hood Ski Bowl East, according to officials.
The Hoodland Fire District was dispatched at approximately 9:35 a.m. after reports that a maintenance basket associated with a chairlift had fallen into steep, rugged terrain.
Firefighters and paramedics hiked into the remote area to reach two injured individuals and began rescue and medical operations under difficult conditions. Officials said the terrain and location required specialized response efforts, including support from the American Medical Response Reach and Treat Team, which played a key role in accessing the site and providing patient care.
Additional resources, including all-terrain vehicles and air medical services such as Life Flight Network, were deployed to assist in the response.
Authorities said both individuals involved were employees of Ski Bowl. One person died from injuries sustained in the incident, while a second was transported by air to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Multiple agencies assisted in the response, including Clackamas Fire District, the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, the United States Forest Service, and Ski Bowl personnel.
“This was a complex and challenging incident in difficult terrain,” Hoodland Fire officials said in a statement. “We appreciate the coordinated efforts of all responding agencies and extend our thoughts to those impacted.”
The incident has been turned over to the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office and the Clackamas County Medical Examiner’s Office. The investigation remains ongoing, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is expected to be notified.
