U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers in Washington, D.C., announced the arrest of Idalia Isabel Morales-Mejia, a Salvadoran national wanted in El Salvador on charges of aggravated homicide and illicit associations.
According to ICE, Morales-Mejia was arrested March 12 in Woodbridge, Virginia, after Salvadoran authorities provided updated information in February about her possible location in Northern Virginia. ICE said she was served with a notice to appear before a Justice Department immigration judge following her arrest.
Officials said El Salvador charged Morales-Mejia in October 2013 with aggravated homicide and illicit associations. ICE also identified her as a documented associate of the MS-13 gang.
ICE Washington, D.C. Field Office Director Robert Guadian said the arrest reflects the agency’s continued focus on locating and removing individuals accused of serious crimes abroad, even when they have no criminal record in the United States.
Authorities said Morales-Mejia entered the United States illegally at an unknown date and location without inspection or authorization.
The arrest follows another recent ICE action involving Marco Tulio Lopez-Romero, a 44-year-old Salvadoran national also wanted in El Salvador for aggravated homicide, who was arrested March 31.
ICE said both arrests were coordinated with international law enforcement partners as part of ongoing fugitive enforcement efforts targeting individuals accused of violent crimes.
