SALEM, Ore. — A Marion County man has been sentenced to more than a decade in prison after pleading guilty to multiple sex offenses involving a minor family member.
On April 23, 2026, Marion County Circuit Court Judge Manuel Perez sentenced 36-year-old Michael Ryan Sims to 125 months in the Oregon Department of Corrections. Sims was convicted on two counts of second-degree sodomy, one count of second-degree rape, and one count of luring a minor. He will also be required to register as a sex offender.
The charges stem from a January 2025 investigation by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office into the sexual abuse of a 12-year-old relative. Authorities determined the abuse occurred in October 2024 at Sims’ residence.
Investigators uncovered cell phone records and social media communications containing explicit messages that corroborated the abuse and confirmed sexual contact. According to officials, the victim’s siblings were frequently present in the home or on the property at the time the abuse occurred.
The case came to light after the victim’s father discovered explicit messages between Sims and the child, prompting law enforcement involvement and subsequent prosecution.
“These crimes will always be our priority as our office remains committed to ensuring children are safe,” said Marion County District Attorney Paige Clarkson in a statement. “This type of conduct, especially by a family member, is particularly heinous. I am grateful for the courage it took for the victim to come forward, and his sentence reflects a measure of accountability.”
The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Matthew Estrada. Officials also credited the work of the Children’s Center and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office for their roles in the investigation and support of the victim.
Due to the involvement of a child victim and the nature of the crimes, authorities said no additional details will be released.
April is recognized as Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness and support efforts to protect children. Anyone with concerns about child safety is encouraged to contact the Oregon Child Abuse Hotline at 1-855-503-SAFE (7233).
