BEND, Ore. (April 16, 2026) — A small brush fire sparked by a weed burner was quickly extinguished Thursday morning after threatening a home along NE Studio Road, according to Bend Fire & Rescue.
Crews were dispatched just after 10 a.m. to reports of a brush fire and arrived to find approximately a 40-foot strip of ornamental juniper bushes burning in front of a residence. The occupant of the home had been attempting to put out the flames with a garden hose, but wind conditions allowed the fire to continue spreading.
The first arriving fire engine was able to quickly knock down the fire, preventing it from reaching the home and nearby vegetation. Officials reported no property damage beyond the burned juniper bushes.
NE Studio Road was temporarily closed while crews worked to fully extinguish the fire and ensure the area was safe.
Fire officials said the blaze was caused by the resident using a weed burner to clear debris from a driveway. While weed burners may be permitted in rural areas during open burning periods, they are prohibited within Bend city limits, where they are classified as debris burning. City ordinance bans all debris burning within Bend.
The occupant received a warning, as it was a first-time offense.
Authorities say the incident serves as a reminder of how quickly fires can ignite, even during cooler, wetter conditions. Despite recent rain and snow, vegetation across Central Oregon remains dry and susceptible to fire.
Bend Fire & Rescue also noted that debris burning season will end earlier than usual this year. All debris burning in Central Oregon is scheduled to close at the end of the day on April 30, 2026.
Residents conducting legal burning outside city limits are urged to take precautions, including having water readily available, clearing flammable materials from the area, and keeping tools on hand. Officials also recommend calling the local burn information line each day before burning, as conditions such as high winds may prompt temporary closures.
