Authorities with the Central Oregon Drug Enforcement (CODE) team have arrested two La Pine residents following a drug investigation that culminated in a traffic stop last week in Madras.
The incident occurred around 5 p.m. on March 26 at the intersection of Cherry Lane and U.S. Highway 26. Detectives stopped a gray 2015 Kia Sportage as part of an ongoing investigation into suspected drug trafficking activity.
The driver, 30-year-old Zachary Steven Simmons, and passenger, 38-year-old Danielle Renee Hood, both of La Pine, were taken into custody.
According to investigators, the case began as a short-term probe into Hood, during which detectives developed information indicating she had been traveling to the Portland area to obtain fentanyl and transport it back to Deschutes County for distribution.
During the traffic stop, a drug detection K9 named Keira, deployed by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, alerted officers to the presence of drugs in the vehicle. Detectives subsequently obtained a search warrant.
A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of more than 50 grams of fentanyl powder, a small amount of methamphetamine, as well as drug ledgers and packaging materials consistent with distribution activities, authorities said.
Both Hood and Simmons were arrested on multiple charges, including possession and delivery of a Schedule II controlled substance and possession of methamphetamine. They were booked into the Jefferson County Jail.
The investigation was led by CODE detectives, with assistance from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the Oregon State Police.
