Oregon City, OR. — During last week’s City Commission meeting, Oregon City resident Jamin Clardy was presented with the Oregon City Police Department Public Service Award by Chief Davis in recognition of his extraordinary courage and decisive action during a violent domestic incident.
The Public Service Award honors a citizen who distinguishes themselves through highly commendable or unusual actions that significantly exceed the expectations of community service. Consideration for the award includes sound judgment, discretion, the absence of recklessness, and a meaningful positive contribution to public safety and law enforcement.
The recognition stems from an incident on December 1, 2025, when officers responded to a reported domestic disturbance involving a violent physical altercation. An initial caller reported that a male suspect had forced his way into his ex-wife’s apartment and was armed with a screwdriver. A second caller confirmed hearing screams for help and reported that the suspect was actively attempting to stab the victim.
Officers later learned that a nearby neighbor, identified as Clardy, had been alerted when the victim’s child—unable to call 911—ran to his apartment seeking help. Without hesitation, Clardy entered the apartment and observed the suspect actively attacking the victim with the screwdriver.
Drawing on his training in jiu jitsu, Clardy immediately engaged the suspect and successfully restrained him for several minutes, maintaining control until officers arrived on scene. His actions allowed the victim and her child to escape without injury.
Police officials noted that Clardy’s willingness to intervene in a dangerous and unpredictable situation to protect complete strangers exemplifies exceptional bravery, selflessness, and public service. Authorities credited his actions with likely preventing serious injury or loss of life.
The Oregon City Police Department expressed gratitude for Clardy’s quick thinking and courage, stating that his actions reflect the highest ideals of community responsibility and commitment to public safety.
