Medford, OR. — The United Soccer League presented plans for a possible professional men’s and women’s soccer franchise in Medford during Wednesday’s City Council Study Session, launching a deeper public discussion about feasibility, sites, and community impact.
USL representatives said the league began exploring Medford in 2025, meeting with City leaders and collaborating with the Medford School District on a conceptual proposal centered on Spiegelberg Stadium at Oakdale Middle School. The effort gained momentum on November 5, when the City of Medford City Council directed staff to execute a non-binding Letter of Intent with USL.
The Letter of Intent established a six-month exclusive negotiation period to evaluate project feasibility, conduct predevelopment work, compare renovation versus new-build options, and identify a preferred site and concept. USL officials told Council that Spiegelberg Stadium is currently the conceptually favored option due to its existing infrastructure and seating capacity, though additional locations remain under review.
City officials and the Medford School District emphasized that if Spiegelberg Stadium is selected, it must remain available for North Medford, South Medford, and Pop Warner football games and practices, ensuring continued community and school access.
If the expansion moves forward, USL estimates the men’s and women’s teams would host roughly 40 home games annually. Beyond soccer, the stadium could function as a year-round “community living room,” accommodating graduations, concerts, festivals, and other large events. USL representatives also highlighted potential economic and social benefits, including local market growth, philanthropic partnerships, and sustainability initiatives.
Council ultimately directed staff to return with a recommendation on whether to extend the Letter of Intent for an additional six months, including clearer details on expected deliverables and staff commitments before any final decisions are made.
