Portland Man Sentenced to Life with Parole Possibility for 2022 Old Town Killing
A Multnomah County judge sentenced Riz’o Eonte Lucas to life in prison with possible parole after 25 years for the fatal shooting of Fars Giday.
Portland, OR. — A Multnomah County Circuit Court judge has sentenced 21-year-old Riz’o Eonte Lucas to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years for the 2022 killing of Fars Giday in downtown Portland.
Judge Heidi Moawad imposed the sentence following Lucas’s conviction for Murder in the Second Degree with a Firearm and Unlawful Use of a Weapon with a Firearm. The charges stem from an April 8, 2022 shooting near SW Naito Parkway and the Burnside Bridge.
Multnomah County Senior Deputy District Attorneys Chris Shull and Glen Banfield prosecuted the case for the state.
Following the sentencing, Shull said the conviction helps restore a sense of safety in Old Town but cannot undo the harm caused. “This conviction helps bring a sense of safety back to Old Town, though no amount of justice will ever make up for the loss of Fars Giday’s life,” Shull said. “Our office feels a deep sense of grief and compassion on behalf of Mr. Giday’s family.”
According to court records, the shooting occurred shortly before noon. Investigators said Lucas, who was 18 years old at the time, approached Giday as he stood near a tent along SW Naito Parkway. Surveillance video showed Giday facing the street when Lucas, wearing a black mask and carrying a distinctive backpack, walked up beside him.
The two men stood next to each other briefly before Lucas pulled a handgun from his pocket and shot Giday in the neck. Lucas then fled toward the Burnside Bridge. Giday collapsed and died from his injuries.
Investigators were unable to identify a clear motive for the killing.
The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office credited Portland Police Detectives Travis Law and Jeff Sharp, along with uniformed Officers Caleb Honl and William Green, for their investigative work. The office also acknowledged victim advocates Heith Curry, Nang Dunn, Olivia Hanes, and others who provided support and assistance to the victim’s family throughout the case.
