North Bend, OR. — North Bend police officers helped turn around a difficult situation for a local middle school student after his bike was stolen from campus earlier this week.
According to the North Bend Police Department, a community member reported suspicious activity near the school, prompting officers to respond. School Resource Officers reviewed video footage and identified both the student and the suspect, an adult who did not have permission to be on school property. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to the Coos County Jail. However, police said the suspect had already hidden the bicycle and refused to disclose its location.
Patrol officers and the department’s Community Resource Officer searched surrounding neighborhoods and wooded areas, but the bike was not recovered. Officers later learned the student had purchased the bike with money he had saved himself.
Wanting the situation to end positively, the officers involved pooled their own money and visited Moe’s Bike Shop. The shop provided a significant discount on a replacement bike and donated a helmet and lock. Officers coordinated with the student’s mother and surprised him with the new equipment, which the department described as bringing the student “pure joy.”
The department thanked Moe’s Bike Shop, the resident who reported the suspicious activity, and the wider community for their support. Police noted that the incident highlights the cooperative spirit that helps make North Bend a safe and supportive place to live.
