Gresham, OR. — The City of Gresham announced that Fire Chief Derik Minard will depart the organization on December 12 to become the next Fire Chief for the City of Savannah, Georgia.
City Manager Eric Schmidt praised Minard’s tenure, noting that he “brought stability and strength to Gresham Fire at a critical moment,” and that his leadership and vision positioned the department for long-term success.
With Minard’s departure, the City has appointed Assistant Chief Jeffrey Hairston as Gresham’s next Fire Chief, effective December 13. Hairston was a top finalist in the City’s most recent national recruitment and earned high marks during the 2024 interview process.
“Chief Hairston is a respected and proven leader who will continue the strong momentum started by Chief Minard,” Schmidt said, adding that Hairston understands the community’s needs and is prepared to guide the department forward.
City officials said the coming weeks will focus on ensuring a smooth transition and maintaining operational continuity. Schmidt emphasized that recent progress within Gresham Fire, along with strong command staff, Local 1062, and support teams, puts the department in a solid position for the future.
Incoming Chief Hairston said he is honored to step into the role, committing to strengthened service, support for firefighters, and deeper community relationships. “We have important work ahead of us, and none of it can be done alone,” Hairston said. “With partnership, transparency, and everyone’s support, we will move this department forward together.”
