Washington County, OR. — A 72-year-old mushroom picker was safely rescued Sunday afternoon after she became stranded on steep, slick terrain in a remote area near the Barney Reservoir.
Just before 3 p.m. on November 23, Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a 911 text reporting that the woman was distressed and unable to climb out of the area she had entered while collecting seasonal chanterelle mushrooms. Deputies from both Washington and Yamhill counties quickly initiated search efforts.
When initial attempts to locate her were unsuccessful, additional agencies were called in. Search and Rescue (SAR) teams from Washington, Yamhill, Clackamas, and Columbia counties, along with Hillsboro and the Oregon State Police, joined the operation. Crews deployed drones, ground teams, and a K9 unit to assist with the search.
Several hours later, rescuers pinpointed the woman’s location using GPS coordinates from a drone and guidance from ground teams. She had brought a whistle and used it to help direct searchers to her position. SAR personnel then used a rope system to reach her and safely guide her out.
Aside from being cold, wet, and thirsty, the woman reported no injuries.
The Sheriff’s Office praised the collaborative efforts of all agencies involved and emphasized the importance of preparation when entering remote natural areas. Officials encouraged outdoor enthusiasts to dress appropriately, bring food, water, and a whistle, and notify others of their plans—steps that contributed to the successful outcome in this case.
