Lane County, OR. — Oregon State Police are investigating a fatal three-vehicle crash that occurred Friday afternoon, November 7, on State Route 569 (Beltline Highway) near milepost 0 in Lane County.
According to the preliminary investigation, a westbound Honda Accord driven by Russell Fredrick Moncrief, 52, of Eugene, braked suddenly and was struck from behind by a westbound Chevrolet Silverado operated by Scott Allen Zipprich, 52, of Elmira. The impact caused the Chevrolet to veer into the eastbound lane, where it collided head-on with an eastbound Dodge Stratus driven by Vincent George Canham, 84, of Eugene.
Moncrief was reportedly uninjured. Zipprich sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Canham was transported from the scene but was later pronounced deceased. A passenger in the Dodge, Rolf Bertel Johansson, 77, of Sweden, was also taken to an area hospital with reportedly minor injuries.
The highway was closed for approximately eight hours while troopers conducted an on-scene investigation. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
OSP was assisted at the scene by Eugene Fire, Springfield Fire, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
