Douglas County, OR. — The Douglas County Board of Commissioners has proclaimed November as Veterans and Military Families Month, calling on residents to celebrate and honor those who have served. The proclamation was read during the board’s October 29 meeting, where dozens of veterans and service organizations were recognized for their contributions to the community.
Commissioner Chris Boice, presenting the proclamation, said that America’s freedoms “have been purchased and protected at an immeasurably high price, paid by those who have served and continue to serve in defense of liberty.”
The ceremony included remarks from veterans such as Bill Duncan, president of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 805, who spoke of the enduring camaraderie among service members, and Elena Lininger of Source One Serenity, who described the healing work her nonprofit does with veterans through outdoor projects.
Commissioners Tim Freeman, Boice, and Tom Kress each expressed gratitude to veterans, with Freeman concluding, “Thank you for your service, and welcome home.”
The county also announced its continued participation in Operation Green Light, illuminating the courthouse in green throughout November to honor veterans and their families.
The 70th Annual Douglas County Veterans Day Parade, titled “1775–2025: 250 Years of Military Excellence”, will take place in downtown Roseburg on November 11 at 11 a.m. The parade has been held every year since 1955 and was once again recognized by the National Veterans Day Committee as one of the top observances in the nation.
