Portland, OR. — Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge Angela Lucero has sentenced 38-year-old Brian Matthew Cort to 25 years in prison following his conviction on one count of Sodomy in the First Degree and two counts of Sex Abuse in the First Degree.
The lengthy sentence comes under the enhancements provided by Jessica’s Law, enacted in Oregon in 2006, which mandates a 25-year prison term for certain sex crimes committed against children under the age of 12.
Deputy District Attorney Reid Schweitzer prosecuted the case, emphasizing the gravity of Cort’s actions.
“The Defendant took advantage of a young child who trusted him, for his own selfish desires,” Schweitzer said. “He is paying the price for the pain and betrayal that he inflicted on this child. I am grateful that the jury saw the truth in the child’s testimony and held his abuser accountable.”
The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office extended thanks to Gresham Police Department detectives Frederick Huffman IV, Adam Wright, and former detective Aaron Dressler, as well as Kyle Mitchell and the forensic scientists at the Oregon State Police Forensic Sciences Division, for their work in securing the conviction. Victim advocates Alie Aguilera and Emma Kane were also recognized for their compassion and support throughout the case.
According to court documents, on September 6, 2020, Cort invited an 11-year-old boy, a child he had previously babysat, to go kayaking on the Columbia River. Before the trip, Cort brought the child to his home and sexually assaulted him. When the child later disclosed the assault to his father, police were immediately contacted. DNA evidence on the victim’s clothing corroborated the report, leading to Cort’s arrest and ultimate conviction.
