Portland, OR – Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge Heidi Moawad on Friday sentenced 24-year-old Jobanpreet Singh to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years, followed by an additional 10-year consecutive sentence for manslaughter. The sentence means Singh must serve 35 years before he becomes eligible for a parole hearing.
The conviction stems from the May 3, 2023, shooting deaths of brothers Dilrajpal and Guriqbal Singh (no relation to the defendant) outside a business on Southwest Barbur Boulevard. The brothers were Singh’s former business partners and were involved in a pending civil lawsuit over the dissolution of their company.
A Multnomah County jury convicted Singh in August 2025 of Murder in the Second Degree, Manslaughter in the First Degree, four counts of Unlawful Use of a Weapon, and three counts of Recklessly Endangering Another Person.
According to trial evidence, surveillance footage showed the victims approaching Singh and his associates at a picnic table outside a business. After a brief verbal exchange, Singh drew a pistol, racked the slide, and fired multiple rounds as the brothers ran away. Prosecutors said Singh pursued and continued shooting even after both victims fell to the ground. Both men died at the scene.
Chief Deputy District Attorney Mariel Mota, who led the prosecution, said after sentencing, “This heinous crime left two children without a father and parents without their sons. We are pleased that the court acknowledged the loss of both lives in her sentence. We wish the sentence was longer, but we also think accountability was delivered by the justice system today.”
Deputy District Attorney Eric Palmer, who assisted with the case along with DDA Bijal Patel, added: “Self-defense is not a law you can hide behind. It is meant to preserve life. This defendant took two lives and he was held accountable for it.”
The case was investigated by Detective Tony Harris of the Portland Police Bureau, with assistance from MCDA Investigators Anthony Merrill and Matt Estes, and Victim Advocate Soukthavy Kanhalikham, whose team supported the families throughout the trial.
Mota praised their work and the jury’s diligence, calling the verdict and sentence “a step toward justice for the families of two young men with loving families and bright futures.”
Singh remains in state custody to begin serving his sentence.
