Baker County, OR. — Official Release: On September 28, 2025 at approximately 1:00 p.m., Sheriff Ash received information that an individual was threatening to harm people at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Halfway, Oregon. Bystanders were concerned because the subject appeared intoxicated and left the premises in his vehicle.
Sheriff Ash responded to the church and spoke with witnesses. During the investigation, it was determined that the subject, identified as Clifford Duane Gross (62 yoa) of Halfway, Oregon, entered the church around 11:30 a.m. He appeared intoxicated and was using profanity.
Gross was escorted out of the building. As two missionaries were speaking with Gross, he became agitated and threatened to physically harm a church member. He ultimately left the premises and drove to his residence.
Sheriff Ash and Sgt. Rilee made contact with Gross at his residence. He was arrested and charged with DUII, Menacing and Disorderly Conduct. Gross was transported to the Baker County Jail and lodged.
