Portland, OR. — Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge Angela Lucero has sentenced 25-year-old Jesse James Allen West to 20 years in prison following convictions in two cases that included multiple counts of attempted murder, robbery, assault, and unauthorized use of a vehicle.
On September 19, 2025, Judge Lucero found West guilty of four counts of Attempted Murder in the First Degree with a Firearm, Robbery in the First Degree with a Firearm, Assault in the Second Degree, Robbery in the Third Degree, and two counts of Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle.
The convictions stem from a 2024 crime spree in which West committed a series of carjackings, including one against an 84-year-old visitor and another involving a woman whose vehicle he crashed into before stealing. When Portland Police’s Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) attempted to arrest him in September 2024, West opened fire, discharging six rounds at officers. No officers were struck, but prosecutors emphasized the deadly risk.

Multnomah County Senior Deputy District Attorney Sean Hughey, who prosecuted the attempted murder case, highlighted the gravity of West’s actions:
“Jesse West’s gunfire came shockingly close to striking and potentially killing one or more of these officers.”
Deputy District Attorney Branden Meadows, who prosecuted the robbery case, added:
“For a two week period, Jesse West terrorized members of our community, including those visiting our beautiful city. Mr. West will serve every day of his 20-year sentence, and the community will be safer as a result.”
The District Attorney’s Office commended members of Portland Police Bureau’s SERT team, Sgt. Matthew Jacobsen, Det. Raelynn McKay, and Victim Advocate Alex Bidwell for their roles in apprehending West and supporting victims.
West, who survived after being shot by police during the attempted arrest, will serve his sentence without eligibility for early release under Oregon law.
