Portland, OR. — President Trump discussed the possibility of deploying National Guard to Portland following the ongoing riots at the ICE facility there. In reporting from Fox News yesterday a spokesperson from ICE stated
“Our ICE law enforcement officers are now facing a 1,000% increase in assaults against them. The men and women of ICE put their lives on the line every day to arrest violent criminal illegal aliens to protect and defend the lives of American citizens,” the spokesperson added. “Politicians and activists must turn the temperature down and tone down their rhetoric.”

This is the most recent development in the ongoing tension between the federal government’s approach to immigration enforcement and the State of Oregon which has sanctuary policies. Portland Mayor Keith Wilson recently stated that “we will not engage with the federal immigration enforcement that goes on. That is our sanctuary city goals, that is what the governor’s goals are. So you can rest assured we won’t be engaging with or working with ICE in any circumstances.”
Oregon Governor Tina Kotek has made public statements that she will stand behind Oregon’s sanctuary policies, including a recent back and forth with Attorney General Pam Bondi about the possibility of Oregon violating federal law, which Kotek denies. Governor Kotek recently signed a letter with 19 Democratic governors challenging President Trump’s deployment of National Guard forces without the request and consent of a state’s governor.
The ongoing riots outside of the Portland ICE facility have caught national attention and have continued unabated since mid-June.
.@PortlandPolice has been accused of "abdication of duty" after records reveal officers failed to respond to 911 calls, haven’t made a single arrest, including for serious acts of violence, outside the Portland ICE facility since mid-June.
