The transportation bill proposed during the regular session, which failed to be passed by the legislature, would have resulted in a record $15 billion in tax increases. Oregon Citizen and the Republican representatives were critical of the previous legislation and have been critical of the proposal from the Governor’s Office, which would raise gas taxes and transportation related fees. The end of the regular session and the original transportation bill were marked by controversy when Democratic Senator Chris Gorsek became aggressive towards fellow committee person Representative Shelly Boshart Davis.
One of the Representatives appearing in the conversation on X, Dwayne Yunker recently posted a snapshot from the Governor’s proposed bill showing revenue to be brought in by increased fees and taxes. According to the post registration fees would increase by $42 with title fees increasing by $139. Representative Yunker claimed it could cost families over $500/year. A 0.1% increase in payroll tax would be $50 on every $50,000; the Motley Fool has previously estimated an average consumption of 656 gallons per driver / year. For that many gallons per year a $0.06 tax per gallon would be $39.36. This suggests that at minimum a one vehicle household could expect to pay at least an additional $90 in taxes per year. Data from 2024 shows Oregon as the 10th highest for gas taxes at the present 40 cents per gallon tax.
The governor just released her ODOT budget bill for the special session. This could cost the average Oregon family well over $500/year. We don't need more taxes. We just need to reprioritize!

Representatives Diehl and Osborne recently criticized the proposed approach to transportation funding. In a post on X Representative Diehl stated “Gas tax and transit tax hikes are not needed. What’s needed is focusing ODOT on mission by eliminating irrelevant programs, restoring merit based hiring, and prioritizing fiscal responsibility.” Representative Osborne posted a visual showing a calculation for Oregon’s gas price and why they “are so high” calling to “Stop the insanity!”
