Oregon – Official Release: Since 1947, the VFW has sponsored an essay contest. Named the “Voice of
Democracy,” this program annually challenges high school students to submit a three-to-five minute long audio recording answering a specific question. This year’s question is, “How Are You Showing Patriotism and Support for Our Country?”
Entries enter a national competition that culminates with the national award winner receiving a $35,000 scholarship. The VFW also awards prizes to local and regional winners.
For middle school students, “Patriot’s Pen” calls for a 300-400 word essay answering the same question. The national grand prize winner of this contest receives $5,000. An entry form and full contest rules are available at Youth Scholarships – VFW. Students can submit entries to VFW Post 1833 (2424 N. Pacific Hwy in Medford) by
