Medford, OR. — Official Release: Field 6 at Lithia & Driveway Fields will soon be renamed “Greg Jones Field” to honor the former City leader’s 41 years of service and dedication to the community.
Greg Jones, who worked for Medford Parks, Recreation and Facilities for 29 years—including 22 years as its director—retired in 2002 as the longest-serving director in the department’s history.
His leadership helped shape Medford’s parks system, including the creation of 12 City parks and the acquisition of parkland that is now home to Lithia & Driveway Fields. Jones also had considerable success in securing federal Land and Water Conservation funds for the City.
“Greg Jones is a legendary figure in our department’s history, and he was instrumental in acquiring property and helping develop our outstanding park system,” Parks, Recreation and Facilities Department Director Rich Rosenthal said. “We’re thrilled to honor his legacy and longtime service to the City and the community.”
Beyond his contributions to the department, Jones served as interim City Manager in 1998, followed by two terms on the City Council from 2004 to 2011. Later, he served an appointed term on the Medford Water Commission from 2018 to 2021.
The renaming of Field 6 was approved by the Parks and Recreation Commission during its April 22 meeting and received final approval from the City Council on May 7.
A new sign honoring Jones is scheduled to be installed by July 1.
