August 12, 2024 – Oregon Senate Republicans: Oregon Senate Republicans to Introduce Legislation to Better Protect Oregonians by Reforming Sanctuary Laws
The Oregon Senate Republican Caucus is announcing a renewed commitment to address the severe issues caused by Oregon’s current sanctuary laws. Recent developments, including a troubling case reported by Oregon Live, have highlighted the urgent need for legislative reform to ensure our justice system can effectively address serious criminal matters.
According to the article, a local District Attorney has been unable to extradite an accused child molester and murderer due to the constraints imposed by Oregon’s sanctuary laws. This situation underscores the critical flaws in our current system, which is hindering law enforcement’s ability to seek justice for victims and hold dangerous criminals accountable.
Senate Republican Leader Daniel Bonham (R-The Dalles) stated, “The safety of Oregonians, especially our children, must be our top priority. The inability to extradite individuals accused of heinous crimes due to sanctuary policies is unacceptable. Our current laws need to be reformed to ensure that our justice system can operate effectively and protect our communities. The Senate Republican Caucus is committed to introducing legislation that will address these issues in the 2025 session.”
The Senate Republican Caucus is calling on all legislators to join in this effort to reform Oregon’s sanctuary laws and ensure that justice is served and public safety is upheld.
