Portland, OR. – Official Release: A Multnomah County Circuit Court judge sentenced Shaka Imani Chambers, 48, to life in prison (with the possibility of parole after 25 years) for the murder of Juan Carlos Artiles.
Incident
On September 4, 2022 at approximately 5:42 a.m., Portland Police officers responded to the 6000 block of Southeast 90th Avenue on a report of a person shot inside a residence. Officers arrived at the residence and found an adult male deceased, who was later identified as Juan Carlos Artiles, 27. The Medical Examiner determined the cause of death as a gunshot wound and the manner of death a homicide.
Through an investigation, PPB detectives identified the suspect as Shaka Imani Chambers. He was arrested on September 12, 2022 and has remained in custody since.
Trial
Deputy District Attorneys Aileen Santoyo and Mackenzie Ludwig prosecuted the case. The trial took place in front of the Honorable Judge Michael Greenlick from July 15-30, 2024. Today, the 12-person jury returned a guilty verdict on three counts, and Judge Greenlick sentenced Chambers as follows:
- Life in prison (with the possibility of parole after 25 years) for one count of Murder in the Second Degree with a Firearm;
- 36 months consecutive for one count of Burglary in the First Degree with a Firearm; and
- One count of Unlawful Use of a Weapon with a Firearm merged with the sentence imposed for the charge of Murder in the Second Degree with a Firearm.
Chambers is currently in custody in Multnomah County and will be transported to the Oregon Department of Corrections to serve his sentence.
