Tigard, OR. – Official Release: Tigard City Manager Steve Rymer has appointed Tigard’s Interim Chief of Police Jamey McDonald as the Chief of Police moving forward.
Chief McDonald joined the Tigard Police Department in 2001 and is the first Tigard Police Chief to rise through the ranks internally from patrol officer to leader of the department.
“I consider it an honor and a privilege to continue serving Tigard as your Chief of Police,” Chief McDonald said. “This is not a role I take lightly, and I recognize the responsibility that comes with this position. As your Chief, I will continue to prioritize transparency, engagement and professionalism at all levels within our department, to best serve the needs of our growing community.”
“Chief McDonald has continued to impress me with his leadership and forward-thinking actions during his time as our Interim Chief. He is a proven leader for our Police Department and all of Team Tigard,” City Manager Rymer added. “Chief McDonald has also demonstrated that serving our entire community is of the highest priority for him and our entire Police Department. I have great trust and confidence that Chief McDonald will embrace his responsibilities with positivity, transparency, and a willingness to listen. After joining the Tigard Police Department as a patrol officer in 2001, Chief McDonald also served as a School Resource Officer, Field Training Officer, firearms instructor and Commercial Crimes Unit Detective Sergeant. He was promoted to sergeant in 2010, lieutenant in 2014 and commander in 2016. He was most recently named Interim Chief at the beginning of 2024 with the retirement of former Chief Kathy McAlpine.
He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Geography and Regional Planning from Eastern Oregon University, an Executive Certification from the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) and is a graduate of the 266th session of the FBI National Academy. He is active in both the Oregon & International Associations of Chiefs of Police and the FBI National Academy Associates and is a past president of the Oregon chapter.
Chief McDonald is also a lifelong Oregonian who enjoys spending time with his grandkids, playing competitive soccer and being outdoors. He will be officially sworn-in sometime in the next few weeks. Details will be shared as soon as they are available.
