December 29, 2023 – Oregon Republican Party: Press Release on Free and Fair Elections
Earlier today misleading rumors circulated online claiming that in what could be a reaction to attempts to remove former President Donald J. Trump from the primary ballot, a New York Times article stated that ORP would “elect presidential nominating delegates via the state party’s convention to be held May 25, instead of in the state’s May 21 primary election.”
This rumor is misleading at best.
Delegates to the RNC convention will be elected on May 25, but this is NOT instead of in the May 21 primary election. Election of Delegates is how ORP elects individuals to take that vote to the national convention.
ORP’s elected Delegates to the RNC convention will be selected at the May 25 ORP Convention, which will occur after Oregon’s GOP primary election on May 21.
The ORP created rules for the Delegate selection process in July of 2023. This was long before Oregon’s Secretary of State Lavonne Griffin-Valade ruled on November 30, 2023 that she did not have the authority to remove Mr. Trump from the ballot. In December, the same group that challenged Mr. Trump’s eligibility in other states filed suit with the Oregon Supreme Court against the Secretary of State’s ruling.
ORP and the RNC are cooperating to develop contingency plans to ensure that Republican voters in Oregon have the freedom to select the candidate of their choice should the Oregon Supreme Court remove Mr. Trump from the ballot.
