December 16, 2023 – Senator Daniel Bonham: Facebook Post
Yesterday, I found myself in a new space – the Oregon Supreme Court. Having never been in this courtroom before- the process surprised me. Seven justices presiding and asking questions throughout the oral arguments- the back and forth was impressive. Both our attorney and the Secretary of State’s attorney presented well-articulated, well-thought out arguments as to what the following words mean:
“Failure to attend, without permission or excuse, ten or more legislative floor sessions called to transact business during a regular or special legislative session shall be deemed disorderly behavior and shall disqualify the member from holding office as a Senator or Representative for the term following the election after the member’s current term is completed.”
Time will tell what the court will rule – I believe the language is clear- after missing more than 10 days I will not be allowed to serve in office after the election following the end of my term, which will be in November of 2030. I’m looking forward to hearing the courts ruling and the clarity it will bring for the next election cycle.
