October 17, 2023 – Marion County Republican Central Committee: Vote No – Silver Falls excessive school bond
Measure 24-486 is a 138 million dollar school bond for the Silver Falls School district.
The total student population of the district is 3524 pupils.
The stated purpose of this bond is to update the buildings of the schools and replace the 445 student middle school. As parts of the school are condemned it needs replacing.
This bond is based on data from 2017. Much has changed since then. School district has declining enrollment. On average enrollment in Silver Falls schools has dropped 24% over the last four years. This level of spending is not justified by the reduced student population.
Compare the Silver Falls school bond (138 Million) to the similar School bond for St Paul (3 million) covering many of the same deficiencies including the construction of a new building. The difference per student is Silver falls 40k per student and St Paul 10k.
At 1.60 per accessed 1000 and based on the average home value this bond would result in an additional $830 in property taxes per year.
The updates are needed but this bond is irresponsible and excessive.
Vote No on Measure 24-486
