Fairview Mayor Brian Cooper Tenders Immediate Resignation

September 27, 2023 – Office of the Mayor:

Dear City Council and Fairview residents,

My time in the Fairview community has been some of the most rewarding times in my life. I may have started my journey in city government as a reluctant councilor just trying to fill the shoes of his father, but I quickly learned to love the people who were part of that journey and the job of being a public servant. I would like to give a special thanks to my early mentors who helped guide me. They were Joe Gall, Samantha Nelson, Barb Jones, Lisa Barton-Mullins and Steve Owen.

When I look back over the last 11 years it is full of accomplishments I could not have done alone including: Friends of Fairview with Darren Riordan and Keith Kudrna, PlayEast with Larry Morgan, Mayor Doug Daoust and Mayor Ted Tosterud and Fairview Food Plaza (aka “The Fork”) with Allan Berry and my wife, Ginell Cooper, to name only a few. We very much lived up to the mantra by Margret Mead: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” While we may not have changed the world, I believe I am leaving Fairview better than I found it.

I spent my time on council finding diverse voices to represent the community. Fairview is in a unique position in the Metro region of having a small-town budget with big city problems. While Fairview has done a fantastic job, with such a small staff, holding the issues of the big city at bay while keeping Fairview the beautiful, family friendly gem of East County I came to love, challenges still loom in the future that will take a council of bold vision and conviction to navigate. I would like to, once again, urge people to volunteer for their community. It is both rewarding and meaningful.

With a heavy heart, I tender my resignation effective immediately. Thank you to the City of Fairview and my fellow council members for this opportunity to serve my community. May the Force be with you.
