Deschutes County, OR. — As the May 19 primary election approaches, Deschutes County officials are reminding political campaigns and supporters that campaign signs are prohibited within county road rights of way and will be removed if placed there.
According to the Deschutes County Road Department, local code strictly forbids political signage in these areas due to safety concerns. Officials say improperly placed signs can obstruct sight lines, distract drivers, and interfere with the visibility of traffic control devices.
“Deschutes County Code strictly prohibits political signs in county road rights of way,” said Road Department Director Chris Doty. “Signs placed along roadways can create safety hazards.”
Campaigns and supporters are responsible for ensuring signs are placed legally. The county encourages use of the Deschutes County Dial interactive map to identify approximate right of way boundaries before posting signage.
Political signs are allowed on private property in unincorporated areas with landowner permission. County rules permit signs to be displayed up to 30 days before an election and require removal within five days after Election Day.
Officials also noted that political signs are not allowed within state highway rights of way. Because those boundaries may not be clearly marked, campaigns are advised to contact the Oregon Department of Transportation through its “Ask ODOT” online portal before placing signs near highways.
