Oregon — Marking a powerful start to 2026, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) announced major results from Phase II of Operation Fentanyl Free America, a nationwide effort targeting drug trafficking networks and cartel operations.
Between January 12 and February 10, agents seized more than 4.7 million fentanyl pills and nearly 2,396 pounds of fentanyl powder equivalent to over 57 million potentially lethal doses removed from circulation in just 30 days.
Federal officials say the operation is part of a broader strategy to dismantle transnational criminal organizations responsible for fueling the nation’s ongoing drug crisis. DEA Administrator Terrance Cole described fentanyl as a weaponized substance used by cartels to drive addiction and profits, emphasizing the need for coordinated enforcement and public education efforts.
In the Seattle Field Division alone, authorities seized 54 kilograms of fentanyl, along with methamphetamine, cocaine, firearms, and nearly $470,000 in cash, while arresting 87 individuals during the month-long operation.
Nationwide, the effort resulted in more than 3,000 arrests and the seizure of massive quantities of illegal drugs, including nearly 148,000 pounds of cocaine, 21,000 pounds of methamphetamine, and over 26 million methamphetamine pills. Law enforcement also confiscated more than 1,500 firearms and tens of millions of dollars in illicit proceeds.
Officials say synthetic drugs like fentanyl are often produced in large-scale clandestine labs and distributed through complex networks dealing in multiple substances, making enforcement efforts increasingly challenging.
The Fentanyl Free America initiative, launched in late 2025, focuses on disrupting supply chains, targeting financial networks tied to cartels, and increasing public awareness of the dangers of illicit drugs.
DEA leaders say the agency will continue aggressive enforcement efforts, stressing that both interdiction and prevention are essential to reducing overdose deaths and curbing the spread of fentanyl nationwide.
