Oregon — A major safety improvement project along Interstate 84 between Portland and Hood River is set to begin March 23, with drivers advised to expect intermittent traffic disruptions through fall 2026.
The project, part of Oregon’s All Roads Transportation Safety Program, will bring periodic shoulder, lane, and ramp closures at multiple interchanges along the corridor. Construction crews will implement detours and use flaggers to guide traffic during both daytime and nighttime work.
Travelers should anticipate single-lane closures and occasional temporary shutdowns of traffic signals at certain intersections overnight. In those cases, flaggers will direct vehicles through impacted areas. Temporary sidewalk closures are also expected, though ADA-compliant pedestrian detours will be provided.
The work will focus on improving safety and visibility at several key on- and off-ramps, including locations in Portland, Gresham, Fairview, Troutdale, and Hood River. Specific intersections scheduled for upgrades include NE 33rd Avenue, NE Halsey Street, NE 122nd Avenue, NE 181st Avenue, and the U.S. 30 connection at the Hood River Bridge.
Officials say the project is designed to enhance roadway safety along one of Oregon’s busiest transportation corridors, though timelines may shift depending on weather and other construction factors.
Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and remain alert in work zones throughout the duration of the project.
