Salem, OR. — Drivers using Liberty Road S will encounter a new traffic signal beginning Feb. 3 at the intersection with Davis Road S, aimed at improving safety and traffic flow during busy travel periods.
The signal is intended to reduce conflicts for drivers making left turns onto either roadway, particularly during peak hours. City officials urge motorists and pedestrians to be alert as the signal becomes active, follow posted signage, and expect minor delays while traffic patterns adjust.
The need for a signal at Liberty Road S and Davis Road S was identified through traffic studies required for nearby housing developments. Those studies determined the intersection met established safety warrants under the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, a national standard published by the Federal Highway Administration.
Funding for the project comes from a combination of the 2022 Safety & Livability Bond, System Development Charges, and contributions from recent developments to cover their share of intersection improvements.
In November 2022, voters in the Salem approved a $300 million community improvement bond to support a 10-year plan for upgrades to streets, sidewalks, bike paths, parks, and public facilities across the city.
