Jackson County, OR. — A 48-year-old man was killed Wednesday evening after being struck by a pickup truck while crossing at the Interstate 5 Exit 33 northbound on-ramp in Central Point, authorities said.
Jackson County Sheriff’s Office reported that emergency dispatchers received a call at approximately 5:39 p.m. on January 21 regarding a pedestrian struck at the intersection of Pine Street and the on-ramp. Deputies from JCSO responded alongside the Central Point Police Department, Jackson County Fire District 3, and Mercy Flights.
Investigators said a 65-year-old Central Point man driving a 2022 GMC Sierra struck the pedestrian, who was in a marked crosswalk at the time of the collision. Mercy Flights transported the victim to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased about an hour later. The victim was from the Las Vegas area.
JCSO requested a callout of the Jackson County Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction (STAR) Team to conduct a full investigation. The multi-agency team includes investigators from JCSO, Medford Police Department, Central Point Police Department, Ashland Police Department, and the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office.
The roadway was closed for approximately three hours during the investigation, with Jackson County Roads assisting with traffic control.
According to JCSO, the driver is cooperating with investigators, and based on preliminary findings, no criminal charges are being considered at this time. Once the investigation is complete, findings will be forwarded to the district attorney’s office for final review.
Authorities said the names of the driver and the victim will not be released unless criminal charges are filed. No additional information was immediately available.
