Oregon — President Donald Trump announced that the federal government will halt payments to sanctuary cities and states beginning February 1, citing public safety and accountability concerns.
In a statement shared by Rapid Response 47, Trump said jurisdictions with sanctuary policies “do everything possible to protect criminals at the expense of American citizens,” adding that such policies “breed fraud and crime.”
The announcement signals a renewed push by the Trump administration to use federal funding as leverage against state and local governments that limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. Sanctuary policies typically restrict local law enforcement from assisting federal authorities with certain immigration actions.
USA Facts.org reports that in 2022 Oregon received a total of $19.9 billion dollars in federal dollars.
The White House has not yet released details on which specific funding streams would be affected or how compliance would be determined.
Many elected officials in Oregon have issued statements backing the state’s sanctuary policies and calling for immigration enforcement to leave the cities and states. The conflict between the state and federal government has placed local jurisdictions and law enforcement in the middle of the conflict as they seek clarity between the differing policies.
