Matthew Piatt, a Beaverton business executive and consultant, officially announced today that he is entering the race for Governor of Oregon, vowing to bring new leadership, stronger accountability, and a renewed commitment to the hardworking families of the state.
“Oregon stands at a crossroads,” Piatt said. “For too long, Oregonians have been asked to accept declining results from state leadership while paying more and getting less. It’s time for change, and it’s time to restore the values that make Oregon strong.”
Under Gov. Tina Kotek’s administration, Oregon continues to face mounting challenges. Downtown Portland’s occupancy rate has fallen to 34.6%, highlighting the ongoing struggles of the state’s economic and urban recovery efforts. Oregon’s unemployment rate remains elevated at 5%, and a recent survey by Public Opinion Strategies found that 67% of respondents believe Oregon’s economy is on the wrong track.
The state’s financial stability is also faltering. Oregon now faces a projected annual budget deficit of nearly $400 million, while the Oregon Health Plan is expected to accumulate a deficit nearing $12 billion over the next decade, raising concerns about the long-term solvency of critical health services.
Meanwhile, legislative policies continue to add pressure to household budgets. House Bill 3991, that was signed into law by Gov. Kotek on November 10th, raises the state gas tax by 0.06 cents to 0.46 cents per gallon, doubles the statewide payroll tax from 0.1% to 0.2%, and doubles the annual registration fees for passenger vehicles—changes that will further burden families already grappling with inflation and rising costs.
Piatt argues that these issues stem from the absence of sound fiscal leadership and a lack of focus on the core priorities that matter to everyday Oregonians.
“Our state desperately needs new executive leadership,” Piatt said. “As Governor, I will work hard to support the Oregonian values of lower taxes, fiscal responsibility, smaller government, and individual freedom. My campaign is built on a simple promise: to return power to the people and deliver real results—not excuses.”
Piatt emphasized his commitment to rebuilding Oregon public education to world-class status, restoring trust in state government, strengthening public safety, revitalizing urban and rural economies, and ensuring that Oregon remains a place where families, businesses, and communities can thrive.
The Matthew Piatt for Governor campaign will begin statewide outreach immediately, with additional announcements scheduled in the coming weeks.
