Oregon — Oregon’s top Republican legislative leaders issued a joint statement Friday defending federal law enforcement officers involved in a recent shooting in Portland and criticizing Democratic officials for what they described as inflammatory rhetoric.
Senate Republican Leader Bruce Starr of Dundee and House Republican Leader Lucetta Elmer of McMinnville said the incident stemmed from a targeted federal operation involving suspected members of the transnational criminal organization Tren de Aragua. According to their statement, federal authorities reported that officers identified themselves before a driver allegedly used a vehicle as a weapon, prompting an officer to make a split-second defensive decision.
The Republican leaders rejected claims by some Democratic lawmakers that the shooting amounted to “federal violence against Portlanders,” characterizing the encounter instead as an effort to remove dangerous gang members from the community that escalated into a life-threatening situation.
Starr and Elmer emphasized their support for law enforcement at all levels and said elected officials should avoid politicizing an active investigation. They argued that public officials have a responsibility to provide accurate information and maintain calm while facts are still being established.
The statement acknowledged that an investigation into the incident is ongoing and said transparency is important, but added that officers acting in defense of life deserve public support. The leaders also warned that organized criminal groups operating in Oregon should expect continued enforcement efforts across jurisdictional boundaries.
