Portland, OR. — An Oregon state lawmaker drew renewed attention tonight after publicly supporting a Portland vigil organized with the Portland chapter of Democratic Socialists of America and activists that condemned federal immigration enforcement, following an officer-involved shooting.
State Rep. Farrah Chaichi used social media to urge attendance at a vigil at Portland City Hall, describing the incident as part of a “pattern of violence” by Immigration and Customs Enforcement and calling to “Abolish ICE now.” Her post asserted that ICE agents act with impunity and warned of continued escalation unless agents face legal consequences, while also calling to “Abolish ICE”.

That framing contrasts sharply with the account released by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which said U.S. Border Patrol agents were conducting a targeted vehicle stop involving a Venezuelan national allegedly affiliated with the Tren de Aragua transnational gang. According to DHS, agents identified themselves, the driver attempted to run them over with a vehicle, and an agent fired a defensive shot before the suspects fled. Federal officials emphasized the situation remains under investigation.
Anti-ICE protests and riots have taken place around the Portland facility since early summer of 2025. Portland Police reported one arrest was made at last night’s demonstration for menacing after an individual allegedly threatened someone with a knife near Southwest 4th Avenue and Madison Street. No other significant incidents were reported, and police noted that since ICE-related protests began in mid-2025, a total of 73 arrests have occurred citywide.
Chaichi’s endorsement of the vigil aligns with messaging promoted by the Democratic Socialists of America, which has been active in Portland anti-ICE organizing. Critics argue the rhetoric minimizes unresolved facts and pre-judges a federal investigation, while supporters say it reflects longstanding community concerns about immigration enforcement.
Federal authorities have said additional details will be released as the investigation continues.
