Newport, OR. — The City of Newport will restart its annual citywide water main flushing program during the week of January 12, continuing through early spring.
Flushing will occur Monday through Thursday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. City officials advise residents to reduce water usage when flushing is taking place in their area, as temporary water discoloration and low water pressure may occur.
The city will provide advance weekly updates on its social media channels, including Facebook and Instagram under @CityofNewportOre, identifying the streets scheduled for flushing the following week.
Water main flushing removes naturally accumulated debris, sediment, and minerals from city water mains. The process helps maintain Newport’s water quality and improves system flow. Flushing is scheduled during winter months when reservoir levels are high and water is readily available for the procedure.
Flushing a single street may take up to one hour. During the process, high-pressure water is sent through the mains and discharged through fire hydrants onto streets or other surface areas. No chemicals or additives are used, and the process poses no risk to wildlife or the surrounding ecosystem.
Residents who experience discolored water after flushing in their area are advised to run a cold water tap for several minutes, up to 15 minutes, or until the water runs clear. If discolored water causes staining of clothing or fixtures, rust removal products commonly available at home improvement stores may be used.
