Tigard, OR. — A late-night domestic disturbance in Tigard escalated into a dangerous standoff Sunday when a suspect set his own home on fire while barricaded inside, authorities said.
At approximately 10:49 p.m. on January 4, 2026, deputies with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported domestic incident at a residence in the 17100 block of Southwest Eldorado Drive. Deputies learned that one of the involved parties, 37-year-old Jaime Lopez, had an active felony warrant issued by the Oregon State Parole Board.
Family members exited the home safely, leaving Lopez alone inside. Deputies were advised that Lopez had access to firearms and requested additional resources. The Sheriff’s Office Tactical Negotiations Team and Crisis Negotiations Unit were deployed in an effort to persuade Lopez to surrender peacefully.
During negotiations, Lopez began intentionally setting fires inside the residence, prompting an emergency response from Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue. Fire crews coordinated with law enforcement to deploy hose lines while maintaining a safety perimeter around the home.
As the fire intensified, Lopez sustained burns and smoke inhalation injuries. He eventually appeared at a front window, where he was rescued by tactical deputies and firefighters. Fire crews extinguished the blaze and ensured that neighboring homes were not threatened.
Lopez was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment. No law enforcement officers or firefighters were injured during the incident.
Lopez remains in custody at the hospital. Upon release, he is expected to be charged with first-degree arson, domestic harassment, and the outstanding felony warrant. Investigators noted that additional charges may be forthcoming as the investigation continues.
The Sheriff’s Office credited coordinated efforts among responding agencies, including fire and medical personnel, for preventing further injuries and damage.
