Newport, OR. — A Newport man was arrested December 11 after leading police on a high-speed pursuit from Newport to Lincoln City, following a reported burglary investigation.
According to the Newport Police Department, officers were alerted at approximately 11:48 a.m. by a neighboring law enforcement agency about a vehicle suspected to be involved in a burglary in the Waldport area. Surveillance images and a vehicle description were shared with Newport officers.
An officer later located a vehicle matching the description parked at the Fred Meyer lot at 150 NE 20th Street. When the officer attempted to contact the driver and issued lawful commands to remain in the vehicle, the driver refused to comply and fled the scene, driving over a curb and heading northbound on Highway 101.
Police initiated a traffic stop using lights and sirens, but the driver continued at a high rate of speed. Near the intersection of Highway 101 and Northwest 25th Street, the suspect clipped another vehicle in a turn lane, causing minor damage. No injuries were reported, and the suspect did not stop.
Partner agencies coordinated ahead of the pursuit and deployed spike strips, which damaged multiple tires on the fleeing vehicle. The pursuit ended near Southeast 51st Street in Lincoln City when the vehicle lost traction and could not continue.
The driver exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot before being restrained by construction workers at the scene. He was taken into custody and later identified through fingerprinting as Tyler Mullen, 32, who was found to have active arrest warrants for a probation violation issued by the Oregon State Parole Board.
Mullen was lodged at the Lincoln County Jail on multiple charges, including felony and misdemeanor fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, reckless driving, reckless endangering, failure to carry or present a driver’s license, and failure to perform the duties of a driver.
Newport Police thanked the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Lincoln City Police Department, and Oregon State Police for their assistance. The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer Mangum at 541-574-3348 or submit tips through the Newport Police Tip Line.
