Clackamas County, OR. — Clackamas County officials are urging residents—especially those living in low-lying and flood-prone areas—to prepare for possible flooding as a series of winter storms continues to bring heavy rainfall across the region.
The National Weather Service has issued multiple flood warnings, including for Johnson Creek near Sycamore, where levels are expected to reach minor flood stage between 4 and 10 a.m. Tuesday. County officials warn that areas which frequently experience high water could see rising levels again and are advising residents to use caution when traveling, as rain and pooling water can quickly reduce visibility.
“During this time of year and in these conditions, even a few inches of rain can cause a flood,” said Clackamas County Disaster Management Director Daniel Nibouar. “It’s important to take as many precautions as you can now and stay alert to the weather forecast.”
The county has sent alerts to residents near Johnson Creek and offers sandbags, safety resources, and preparedness information online. Officials emphasize several key safety reminders:
- Turn Around, Don’t Drown: Never drive through flooded roadways; as little as 12 inches of moving water can sweep away a small vehicle.
- Check conditions before traveling using TripCheck for the latest road updates and closures.
- Avoid walking through floodwaters, which may contain contaminants such as sewage, oil, or debris.
In a related advisory issued Monday, the county reminded residents that storm drains can clog easily during the rainy season when leaves and debris accumulate, increasing the risk of neighborhood flooding. Clackamas Water Environment Services and the Oregon Environmental Council recommend clearing storm-drain grates regularly using a rake or pitchfork, keeping leaves at least one foot from curbs, and never dumping yard waste or other materials into storm-drain systems.
County officials say proactive maintenance and awareness can help protect homes, businesses, and local waterways during periods of heavy rain.
