Portland, OR. — After more than a century of equipping and inspiring homebrewers, winemakers, and fermentation hobbyists, F.H. Steinbart Co. announced it will close its retail store in December 2025, bringing an historic chapter in American brewing culture to an end.
Founded in 1917, Steinbart is widely recognized as the oldest homebrew supply store in the United States. Its early roots near SW 1st and Oak in downtown Portland eventually led to its long-time home on SE 12th Avenue, where generations of customers learned to craft beer, wine, cider, and other fermented creations.
In its announcement, the company reflected on its role as both a supplier and a gathering place for a passionate community of makers. “Over the decades, F.H. Steinbart became more than a store. It became a community, a place to learn, experiment, and share what we all love about making beer,” the statement said.
Steinbart thanked customers for 108 years of support, noting that the legacy built by the homebrew community will endure even as the storefront closes.
The company has not yet announced a specific closing date or details about future operations beyond retail.
